Techniques. The four fundamental categories of madra projection practiced throughout Iteration 110.

A sacred artist’s aptitude for these types is assessed in childhood through a spirit test. This assessment shows “where you start, not where you end up,” and the records contain many examples of practitioners excelling in areas their initial aptitude did not predict. [US Ch.1, Ch.20]
Enforcer Techniques (The Shield)

Enforcer techniques range from the general to the highly specialized. Some Enforce the entire body uniformly (the Burning Cloak of the

Striker Techniques (The Arrow)
Striker techniques project madra outward as ranged attacks. The madra leaves the body entirely, traveling as a beam, bolt, wave, or other projectile. Striker techniques tend to be faster to execute than Ruler techniques but require the practitioner’s own madra reserves. [US Ch.1]
The sophistication of Striker techniques varies enormously. A primitive Striker release “floods explosively” in an uncontrolled burst. A refined version, like the Dragon’s Breath, compresses and spins madra three times before release, producing a “dense, almost liquid-looking bar” of concentrated power. [BF Ch.15]
Projecting madra without a proper technique is possible but extremely inefficient: it “bursts in all directions, dies almost immediately like a bubble popping,” and lacks the concentration to harm a practitioner of equivalent power. Technique structure is what makes Striker attacks effective. [SK Ch.5]
Ruler Techniques (The Scepter)
Ruler techniques command vital aura in the environment rather than projecting the practitioner’s own madra. The practitioner’s madra acts as a catalyst, directing external aura to produce effects. [US Ch.1]
“Madra controls aura, and aura controls nature.” Through Ruler techniques, water artists walk on the ocean, earth artists open doors in stone, and force artists make a feather hit like a collapsing boulder. Ruler techniques take time and concentration to build, unlike the near-instant projection of Striker techniques. The tradeoff is power: Ruler techniques draw on the aura of the world itself, which can vastly exceed a practitioner’s personal reserves. [BF Ch.11]
The most powerful Ruler techniques can create the appearance of independent entities. “Really powerful sacred artists can Forge something that looks like it’s alive,” but these are Forger techniques that carry a piece of the creator’s Remnant, not true Ruler effects. The distinction matters: a Ruler technique commands existing aura, while a Forger technique creates new madra constructions. [BF Ch.13]
Pure madra has no corresponding vital aura, which means pure madra practitioners cannot use conventional Ruler techniques. “No such thing as pure aura.” This limitation forces pure madra Paths to find alternative approaches, such as flooding an area with pure madra to disrupt other practitioners’ techniques. [SK Ch.5]
Forger Techniques (The Hammer)
Forger techniques solidify madra into physical or semi-physical constructs: barriers, weapons, soldiers, and structures. Forged madra can persist after creation, unlike Striker techniques which dissipate after impact. [US Ch.1]
The durability of Forged constructs varies with the practitioner’s power and the nature of their madra. Life madra cannot be Forged into solid shapes (“even life Remnants are giant blobs of ooze”), while other types readily take physical form. [BF Ch.1]
Forger techniques can achieve remarkable complexity at higher levels of mastery. The records document techniques that produce independent-seeming entities, barriers that adapt to incoming attacks, and constructs with multiple layered functions. As with all techniques, a Forger technique practiced over centuries grows “far stronger” than any newly invented alternative. [GW Ch.12]
Technique Development
The philosophy of technique development is well documented. “Look at the purpose of your Path and cultivate techniques to accomplish that purpose.” Advanced practitioners develop a thousand ways to use the same seven or eight techniques rather than inventing new ones. A Monarch could theoretically create new techniques every five seconds, but each would be a thousand times weaker than one honed over centuries of practice. [GW Ch.8, Ch.12]
Old Truegolds are often stronger in raw technique power than young ones, having practiced for centuries. Young Truegolds, however, are more respected for their advancement potential. This creates a distinction between power and promise that shapes sacred arts culture throughout Cradle. [GW Ch.8]
