Goldsigns. Physical marks that appear when a sacred artist reaches Gold. Their form depends on the Remnant absorbed.
Overview
When a sacred artist reaches Gold by absorbing a compatible
The absorbed Remnant’s madra blends with the practitioner’s own as it gradually dissolves. Memories and sensations from the original host lurk at the back of the mind during this process. “By the time he reached Truegold, he would have digested it completely,” gaining full control over the absorbed power. [BF Ch.2]
Goldsign Variation
Goldsigns take an enormous variety of forms across different Paths and Remnant types:
| Path | Goldsign | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Bladed silver arms of liquid steel | Sword Sage’s Remnant [SS Ch.14] | |
| Path of the Stellar Spear | Metallic hair rigid as iron | Stellar Spear Remnant [SS Ch.4] |
| Path of the Sandviper | Miniature green snake-insect creatures bonded to arm | Sandviper Remnant [SS Ch.4] |
| Path of the Fisherman | Webbed fingers | Fisher Remnant [SS Ch.14] |
| Path of Grasping Sky | Emerald wings | Naru clan Remnant [BF Ch.1] |
| Path of the Cloud Hammer | Small hovering cloud over head | Cloud Hammer Remnant [SK Ch.3] |
| Path of the Chainkeeper | Hands dipped in glossy black to the elbow | Akura Remnant [SK Ch.14] |
The records document hundreds of additional variations. This selection illustrates the breadth of possibility.
Deviant Goldsigns
Absorbing a Remnant incompatible with the practitioner’s Path can produce a deviant Goldsign. The results range from cosmetic distortion to devastating deformity. A Stellar Spear practitioner who absorbed the wrong Remnant developed a jaw that unhinges like a serpent’s, a mouth full of glowing white fangs, and a face twisted beyond recognition. Deviant Goldsigns carry social consequences: the practitioner is often exiled or shunned. [SS Ch.6, BF Ch.2]
Gold Without a Goldsign
Reaching Gold without absorbing a Remnant is possible, though rare. A practitioner who achieves Gold “purely through accumulated power” produces no Goldsign at all. The process requires considerably more time and resources but avoids the risks of Remnant absorption and the permanent mark of a Goldsign. [SK Ch.4]
Goldsign and the Blackflame Exception
Certain Paths produce Goldsign-like effects without Remnant absorption. Practitioners of the
Goldsigns at Herald
When a practitioner merges with their Remnant at Herald, Goldsign changes are uncontrollable. The merge reshapes the body based on the fusion of practitioner and spirit, and the Goldsign’s form may shift in unexpected ways. A practitioner whose metallic Goldsigns became scarlet after merging with a Blood Shadow had no control over that transformation. The new Goldsign reflects the merged entity, not the original Remnant alone. [WS Ch.25]
